Collagen is a protein roughly a thousand amino acids long. Applied to the face, the intact molecule is far too large to cross the barrier, which is why collagen on an ingredient list is a comfort rather than a mechanism.

Skin builds its own collagen continuously, and it does so from amino acids. Nineteen of the twenty proteinogenic amino acids appear in the collagen sequence. Supply the full set in the right ratio and synthesis proceeds; leave one short and the whole process runs at the pace of the scarcest input.

Structure is collagen: the scaffold that decides whether skin looks lifted or slack. Elasticity is elastin, the protein that lets skin return to position rather than staying where it was pushed. Energy is NAD+, the metabolic currency that pays for building either of them — and which declines measurably with age.
